And every man that striveth for mastery is temperate in all things…cast away. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. 1 Corinthians 9:25

True temperance teaches us to dispense entirely with everything harmful and to use judiciously that which is healthful. (CH p. 121)

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31

When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee: And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite. Proverbs 23:1-2

It is possible to eat immoderately even with wholesome food.

The controlling power of appetite will prove the ruin of thousands, when, if they had conquered on this point, they would have had moral power to gain the victory over every other temptation of Satan. But those who are slaves to appetite will fail in perfecting Christian character. CD 163

Jogging can cause an enlarged heart; but walking is the best exercise for the diseased.

It is an easy matter to lose health but it is difficult to regain it. We ca nnot afford to dwarf or cripple a single function of the mind or body by overwork or abuse of any part of the living machinery. My Life Today p. 142
